Privacy Policy
Effective from
This Privacy Policy applies to the Muslim Companion mobile application ("Application") created by Nourdine AIT TMAZIRTE ("Service Provider") and distributed as an Ad-Supported service. The Application is provided "AS IS".
Plain-language summary
- The Service Provider operates no backend server. Your profile, bookmarks, memorisation progress and preferences stay on your device.
- Third-party SDKs (AdMob, Firebase) collect technical data automatically. Each has its own privacy policy linked below.
- Location is used only for prayer-time and qibla calculation, in foreground only. It is never transmitted to the Service Provider's servers (because there are none).
- The Service Provider does not sell your personal data to anyone, ever.
- The Application is intended for users aged 13 and older.
1. Information collected by the Application itself
The Application stores the following data exclusively on your device's local storage:
- Profile data you enter (name, age, gender, language, preferred madhab, aqida, qiraa, reciter, prayer method, location)
- Bookmarks, memorisation programmes and progress, alarms, custom donation organisations, theme preferences
- Usage state (last opened surah, daily routine ticks, hadiths marked as read)
This data is never transmitted to any server operated by the Service Provider. Uninstalling the Application or clearing the app's storage from Android settings deletes all of it.
2. Information collected automatically by third-party services
The Application embeds third-party SDKs that may automatically collect:
- Your device's IP address (used by AdMob to infer approximate region for ad targeting and by Firebase Analytics for aggregated geographic statistics)
- Device model, operating-system version, mobile carrier, system language, screen resolution
- The Android Advertising ID (used by AdMob — you can reset it or opt out of personalised ads in your device settings)
- Aggregated, anonymised usage statistics (screen views, session duration, crashes)
3. Location data
The Application requests foreground-only access to your device's location (ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION / ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION) — never background. Location is used solely for:
- Computing prayer times for your geographical position
- Orienting the qibla compass
- Optionally resolving your city name via the public AlAdhan reverse-geocoding endpoint (only the latitude/longitude is sent; no identifier)
Location is processed locally and stored in your device's local storage with the rest of your profile. It is never transmitted to the Service Provider. AdMob may infer approximate location from your IP address as part of its standard SDK behaviour.
4. Use of Artificial Intelligence
The Application uses Google Translate to translate hadith and Quranic content into 18 languages for which a native translation is not pre-bundled. The text sent to Google Translate is the religious content being shown — never any personal or device-identifying data. Translated text is cached locally on your device. The Application does not use generative AI (no LLM-based content generation).
5. Advertising
The Application displays ads through Google AdMob. Ads may be personalised based on the Android Advertising ID and approximate location inferred from your IP. Content filters are configured at the AdMob dashboard level to block: gambling, alcohol, dating, missionary content, politics, astrology, payday loans.
European Economic Area (EEA), United Kingdom, Switzerland: a consent dialog (Google's User Messaging Platform) appears on first launch and asks for your choice between personalised and non-personalised ads. You can change this choice later via "Settings → Privacy → Manage Consent" inside the Application.
You can opt out of personalised ads at any time by resetting your Advertising ID in Android Settings → Privacy → Ads, or by enabling "Opt out of Ads Personalisation".
6. Children
The Application is intended for users aged 13 and older. Profile creation requires age confirmation; profiles declaring an age below 13 cannot be created. When a profile declares an age below 18, the AdMob SDK is initialised with the tagForChildDirectedTreatment flag and the setTagForUnderAgeOfConsent flag enabled, which forces non-personalised ads and prevents collection of child-related identifiers per Google's Families Policy and U.S. COPPA. If a child has nevertheless used the Application, contact the Service Provider at the email below and any locally-stored profile data can be wiped by uninstalling the Application.
7. Third-party services
Each third-party service has its own privacy policy:
- Google Play Services
- Google AdMob — display advertising
- Google Analytics for Firebase — anonymous usage analytics
- Firebase Remote Config — feature-flag configuration
- Firebase Cloud Messaging — push notifications
- Buy Me a Coffee — donations are handled by tapping an external link that opens buymeacoffee.com in your browser. No Buy Me a Coffee SDK is bundled in the Application; no on-device collection takes place. Their privacy policy applies once you leave the Application.
- Google Translate — runtime translation of bundled content
- HadeethEnc — hadith content API
- AlQuran.cloud — Quranic verses and tafsir API
- AlAdhan — prayer times and reverse-geocoding
8. We do not sell your data
The Service Provider does not, and will never, sell or rent your personal data to anyone. The Service Provider has no database of users to begin with — there is no backend server.
9. Your rights — European Economic Area, United Kingdom, Switzerland (GDPR / UK GDPR)
If you reside in the EEA, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland, you have the following rights regarding personal data processed via the third-party SDKs embedded in the Application:
- Right of access — to know what data is processed about you
- Right to rectification — to correct inaccurate data
- Right to erasure ("right to be forgotten") — see Section 11
- Right to restriction of processing
- Right to data portability
- Right to object to processing
- Right to withdraw consent at any time (relevant for personalised ads — see Section 5)
- Right to lodge a complaint with your national supervisory authority (e.g. CNIL in France, ICO in the United Kingdom, EDPB elsewhere in the EEA)
Because the Service Provider operates no backend server, exercising the rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction or portability with respect to data held by third-party SDKs requires you to contact those SDKs directly using the policy links in Section 7. The Service Provider will assist you on simple request at the email below.
10. Your rights — California (CCPA / CPRA)
If you reside in California, you have the following rights:
- Right to know what personal information is collected, used and shared
- Right to delete personal information
- Right to correct inaccurate personal information
- Right to opt-out of "sale" or "sharing" — note that the Service Provider does not sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioural advertising
- Right to non-discrimination — you will not receive a degraded experience for exercising these rights
To exercise these rights, contact the Service Provider at the email below.
11. Data retention and deletion
All user-entered data lives on your device's local storage. There is no server-side data retention by the Service Provider. To delete locally-stored data:
- Uninstall the Application, or
- Go to Android Settings → Apps → Muslim Companion → Storage → Clear data
Third-party SDKs retain anonymised telemetry per their own privacy policies (linked in Section 7).
11.b — Donations
Donations are entirely optional and processed outside the Application via an external link to Buy Me a Coffee. The Service Provider does not implement Google Play Billing or any other in-app billing system at this time. There is no subscription, no auto-renewal, no in-app payment data collected or stored.
12. Disclosure
The Service Provider may disclose information:
- as required by law (subpoena, court order, similar legal process)
- when believed in good faith to be necessary to protect the Service Provider's rights, your safety or the safety of others, or to investigate fraud
- with trusted service providers acting on the Service Provider's behalf, who may not use the information for their own purposes and have agreed to honour this Privacy Policy
13. Security
User-entered data is stored on your device using Android's standard application storage mechanisms (SharedPreferences / localStorage). The Service Provider does not apply additional encryption at rest; you are responsible for the security of your device (lock screen, OS updates, not rooting). Data transmitted to third-party services travels over HTTPS.
14. Changes to this Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy may be updated from time to time. The Service Provider will notify you by updating this page and the "Effective date" at the top. You are advised to review this Privacy Policy periodically; continued use of the Application after a change is published is deemed approval of the change.
15. Contact
For any privacy-related question, contact the Service Provider at mymuslimcompanion.app@gmail.com.
